Karna: The Great Warrior

Book Review of Karna: The Great Warrior

Death is not an end in itself. It is just another change. We fear change and are afraid of death. The snows on the mighty Himalayas melt in the summers, but that does not mean the purpose of the ice ends there. It converts into the gushing waters of the Ganga. Does Ganga, merging into the vast ocean, lose herself? Isn't that another form of hers?

Saam Daam Dand Bhed Sutra mere naam ka!

Ganga Maa ka Ladla mai KhaamKhaa Badnaam tha!!

Kauravo se hoke bhi koi Karna ko na bhulega!

Jaana jisne mera dukh vo Karn-Karn bolega!!

These lines by Abhi Munde are enough to give goosebumps and many emotions simultaneously.

Life is all about problems and sorrows, but it depends on how one can deal with them. First, one cries and gives up; another uses that to boost their strength. It would help if you gathered much motivation from the same personas' stories to become later. That is the story of one of these.

In this Book Review, I will review a book about the most famous character of Mahabharat after Krishna, "Danveer Karna." follow these pointers,

Initial Impressions of the Book

Nowadays, most of the audience uses entertainment sources to read about their past. For example, Peshwa Bajirao's character came to be known after Bhansali's Film Bhajirao Mastani and Valor of 21 Soldiers in Battle of Saragarhi come to known from Movie Kesari.

Most of them have yet to make even a little effort to search for it in the history books because no one has enough time to waste on this. But, the past incidents have every answer and solution to today's concerns.

When anyone talks about Karna, there is 3 picture that comes to mind:

Pankaj Dheer, Aham Sharma, and Gautam Rode as Karna
Pankaj Dheer, Aham Sharma, and Gautam Rode

The audience imagined Karna's persona in them. But that Book by Ranjit Desai makes you think Karna's character is more than That. Because that nighter exaggerated him, not underrated, but served the actual character, which is enough to give you too many lessons.

All 253 pages of 54 chapters closely examine Karna about his Charity, Promise, Dharma, Sorrows, strength, and, most notably, whether he was a better archer than Arjuna.

Why is Ranjit Desai the most fitting choice for writing that Book?

That is my first Book review whose author is no more. But his works and achievements in still present in the nation's dairy, and that is in the form of the Maharashtra Rajya Award (1963), the Hari Narayan Apte Award (1963), the Sahitya Akademi Award (1964), and the Padma Shri from the Government of India (1973).

Ranjit Desai's works are still highly acclaimed even today. In 2008 a movie based on his novel Raja Ravi Verma was released at London firm festival 2008. Four other films were released based on his literature.

Thanks to Vikrant Pande, who translated his marvelous work into English from Marathi, which allows anyone to access that.

Analysis of Karna: The Great Warrior

The story starts with the scene when Krishna comes to Anga to meet Karna, receives a warm welcome from him, and informs him about Draupadi's Swayamvar, which Karna is unwilling to join despite having the invitation from Drupad.

After Krishna's farewell, Duryodhan requested him to go there, and Karna agreed. But in return, he got insulted by Draupadi. At that time, Karna's hatred behavior toward her starts and finally ends with calling her "Base-Women" at the time of her molestation in Kuru King's council.

The author did not deny the sin done by Karna while protecting the friendship of Duryodhana but gave a strong justification behind every incident. But He highlighted some misbehavior also by Pandavas, who helped to increase his hatred towards them. Like bheema's invasion in Anga despite knowing that Karna has no objection to Yudhishtira's Rajsuya Yajna after Kuru Nation's support.

The personality of Krishna did not show as a superior god, he was a great person then, but the author cut off the imaginary part from it. For instance, at the time of Draupadi's molestation, Krishna came with his Chaturangni Sena to stop Kauravas, which is different from the standard audience belief who thought he saved her from his magical powers.

The same thing did at the time when Duryodhana tried to capture Krishna when he arrived in Hastinapur as a Pandava's diplomate. The book did not tell any Virat Swaroop that Duryodhana feared. So we can say that author considered Krishna as a Mighty King or Manav-Avtaar, not God itself. But it helps you give a more realistic feeling.

The book ends on the 17th Day of Mahabharata when Arjuna's unethical attack martyred Karna after being provoked by Krishna. The same person offered Karna the superior position of Pandavas before the war. But thoughts of Karna about Krishna just before getting hit by an arrow in his neck gives tears to readers, and that is,

I used to revere life, but your intervention made me lose all will to live. I don't fear death. I can easily save my life - all it takes is to ask Arjuna. If I say, "Parth, before you pull the bowstring, ask Krishna how we are related." Would this war not end then and there? Krishna, I don't want to live anymore. I am tired. All I want is death—the way a warrior should die-Fighting.

Three Lessons from that Book

Indra maange bheekh jisse aisa hu Kshtraiya mai

After donating his Kavach and Kundal to Indra, despite knowing it would lead him to death, Karna returned to his home; when he told his wife that he gives charity to lord Indra, she replied that god always gives, not take away. When Karna said,

"This is not always true, Vasu. Man's life is not fulfilled only when he receives something from the lord. There are a few lucky souls whom the lord makes a demand of. It makes life worth living."

Kauravo se hoke bhi koi Karn ko na bhulega

When Bhishma Pitamah was in arrow's bed suggested Karna join Pandavas and that the war will end now. But Karna Replied,

And what about Duryodhana? Who has plunged into this battle depending on me? How cheated would he feel if I joined hands with the Pandavas? His friendship is a treasure I cannot afford to lose.

Jaana Jisne mera dukh vo Karna-Karna Bolega

Those who live only for enjoyment are never remembered later. Such lives come here to live on their past credit. With death, everything they did here ends. But few come here to make others' lives better. They make the world a better place through their sacrifices. They inspire people after their death.

The audience I would recommend this book to

If you ever thought that your life was a curse for you, You were constantly disrespected, and never get you deserved you should, then you must read that.

Karna's Character is all about fighting, whether it is a battlefield or society's prejudices that will give you strength and motivation to win every challenge you have. As I discussed, history reminded those who fight, not those who cry.
